About This Book

Race Mathews believes crude individualism has run its course and
challenges us to imagine an alternative to both big government and the
greed of the market place. Essential reading for those concerned with
returning communities to the centre of our economic life.

Jobs of Our Own argues for 'Distributism' - the belief that ownership
and control should be widely distributed rather than concentrated in
the hands of the state or wealthy minorities. Mathews draws on the
legacies of christian socialism, Social Catholicism, mutualism,
associative democracy and civil society for a new vision of society.

Mathews reveals an alternative cooperative tradition to socialism,
beginning with the emergence of British Ditributism in the wake of the
Pope Leo XIII's encyclical De Rerum Novarum and the disillusionment of
late nineteenth century socialists with the statist turn socialism had
taken under Fabians, Marxists and the Labour Party. Jobs of Our Own
draws a line from British mutualism and cooperatives to practical
examples of successful Distributist enterprises at Antigonish in
Canada and the still-thriving Mondragon enterprises in Spain. All the
time Mathews poses the question - what lessons are there for a genuine
Third Way in today's social democratic project.
