Dear Ami,

Would you please try to spread out (e-mailed out) as widely as possible
this press release. It is a big story, my dear, it is a ready work of
art (the story, I mean)

Love

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The official participation of The Republic of Bulgaria at the 48th
International Exhibition of Contemporary Art La Biennale di Venezia June
13 - November 7, 1999

NEDKO SOLAKOV

"ANNOUNCEMENT"

Curator: Iara Boubnova

A message in Bulgarian, Italian and English is printed over the white,
green and red colors of Bulgarian national flag on large quantities of
postcards, T-shirts, caps, etc.:

VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT AFTER NEARLY 30 YEARS OF ABSENCE FROM THE
OFFICIALLY PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES AT THE VENICE BIENNALE, THE REPUBLIC OF
BULGARIA IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT IT IS PREPARED TO PROPERLY PARTICIPATE
IN THE NEXT VENICE BIENNALE IN THE YEAR 2001.

This message will be handed, mailed, distributed as widely as possible to
the Biennale/art world audience. With a "single shot," it aims to relate
the past, to explain the present and to predict the future of the
generally unknown Bulgarian art. Such participation tries to avoid the
convention of the "representational art piece," especially as prepared for
a Big Show. It will function for a much longer time in the public space,
part of which is shaping the virtual Bulgarian pavilion. Although the
"Announcement" exists within the logic of Nedko Solakov's world of made-up
works/stories/myths, it reflects the absolute reality of Bulgarian
contemporary art history and its political and economic basis. Initiated
by Bulgaria, the official participation at the 48th Venice Biennale is
actually an act of "public relations" in itself and is capable of
extrapolating its own characteristics over reality.

The "Announcement" project was selected by the Bulgarian Ministry of
Culture and confirmed as the official participation of the country in the
Biennale’s advanced stages of preparation. Its realization was made
possible by the generous support of Giancarlo Politi Editore and
Eyecatcher International, Hoorn, The Netherlands.

Since the beginning of the 90's, Nedko Solakov (born 1957, Tcherven Briag,
Bulgaria. Lives in Sofia) has exhibited extensively in Europe and America.
His work was featured in Aperto'93, Venice Biennale; 3rd and 4th Istanbul
Biennials; Sao Paulo’94; Manifesta 1, Rotterdam; 97 Kwangju Biennale;

Contemporary Art, New York; ICA, Philadelphia; P.S. 1, New York; Moderna
Galerija, Ljubljana; Arken Museum of Modern Art, Copenhagen; Wiener
Secession; Ludwig Museum, Budapest and many others. Among his forthcoming
projects are "Faiseurs d’histoires," Casino Luxembourg; "L’Autre moitie de
l’Europe," Jeu de Paume, Paris; "After the Wall," Moderna Museet,
Stockholm; "Locally Interested," ICA, Sofia; "Zeitwenden," Kunstmuseum,
