<nettime> extra! post-9/11 news digest [mod note; armitage x2 + andrews] |
[mod note: i abbreviated (<...>) the news items in this digest because the URLs provided still work (for now). over the last few weeks, a LOT of people have sent in news items, which poses a problem: they're interesting for the most part, but nettime isn't primarily a wire service--and as the list grows (-l/-digest just passed 2100 subscribers today...), tendencies like forwarding news items can become more problematic. the moderators usually ask people to re-send news with a URL + remarks about why a news story is relevant to nettime as such-- which seems like a minimal and flexible way to strike a balance on this aspect of the list. cheers, t] John Armitage <john.armitage@unn.ac.uk> Conflict Will Follow Taliban's Fall John Armitage <john.armitage@unn.ac.uk> American Action Is Held Likely in Asia Ian andrews <i.andrews@metroscreen.com.au> Re: <nettime> Brzezinski: Taliban made in U.S.A. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - From: John Armitage <john.armitage@unn.ac.uk> Subject: Conflict Will Follow Taliban's Fall Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2001 08:23:41 +0100 [Or, get ready for 'Vietnam: The Sequel'?. John.] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ http://www.stratfor.com/home/0110091630.htm Conflict Will Follow Taliban's Fall 1630 GMT, 011009 Summary The United States has begun its military campaign in Afghanistan without first forging a post-Taliban regime. Although opposition forces will take advantage of U.S. air strikes to attempt to drive the Taliban from power, this will only usher in another round of fighting among the victors. Because the United States needs a friendly and stable regime in Kabul to facilitate its primary mission of rooting out Osama bin Laden and his Afghan Arabs, it will find itself drawn into an attempt at nation-building in Afghanistan. This is an intractable problem that could draw the United States into a lengthy, costly and ultimately doomed engagement in Afghanistan at the expense of its primary mission. The officials gave no timetable; they said the campaign against the groups linked to Mr. bin Laden and his group, Al Qaeda, is global and may last for years. But they said that the East Asian groups have expanded their operations in recent years, exchanging money, personnel, materiel and experience with the bin Laden organization and its allies, and that they pose a clear and present danger to American institutions overseas. <...> - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Date: Thu, 11 Oct 2001 18:33:28 +1000 From: Ian andrews <i.andrews@metroscreen.com.au> Subject: Re: <nettime> Brzezinski: Taliban made in U.S.A. Very interesting interview. Its quite likely that the CIA provoked the USSR into the war, but I really think that the Afghanistan war had very little effect on the collapse of the Soviet Union. I think it pales into insignificance next to the efforts of COCOM (CIA) to destabilize the Soviet economy and bankroll the Russian Mafia with hard currency, or even the internal effects of Perestroika. >[the interview is just so brilliant compact, I didnĄt want you to miss] > >http://emperors-clothes.com/interviews/brz.htm > >Ex-National Security Chief Brzezinski admits: Afghan Islamism Was Made in >Washington > >Interview with Zbigniew Brzezinski, President Jimmy Carter's National >Security Adviser in 'Le Nouvel Observateur' (France), Jan 15-21, 1998, p. >76 > >Translated by Bill Blum > >*** > >A couple of thoughts about the Brzezinski interview below.
